{"id":71,"date":"2018-01-20T04:13:00","date_gmt":"2018-01-20T04:13:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.blog.greenarrowfrog.com\/?p=71"},"modified":"2018-01-20T04:13:00","modified_gmt":"2018-01-20T04:13:00","slug":"more-experimentation-with-corel-painter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.blog.greenarrowfrog.com\/?p=71","title":{"rendered":"More Experimentation with Corel Painter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(This post has been in my drafts for nearly a year.\u00a0 I want to keep expanding on this in the future, so&#8230;here you go.)<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been spending hours fiddling with the brush control panels in Corel Painter trying to create usable custom brushes.<\/p>\n<p>Playing with particles, opacity, spacing, blending, damping, global chaos, local chaos, color jitter and a million other settings eventually makes you tired.<\/p>\n<p>This inevitably leads to taking a break to watch youtube videos&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Painter has a feature called audio expression which allows for sound input to influence your brush as you are painting.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve been toying with this a bit so&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Searching YT for audio painting, I found an old video of Android Jones painting with sound in Alchemy:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Andrew Jones Alchemy Demo - Shanghai\" width=\"627\" height=\"470\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zYYSxZZzgjc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>After watching this I went back into Painter and tried yelling weird noises in my mic while drawing to little effect.<\/p>\n<p>Painter doesn&#8217;t have the shape distortion effects that Alchemy has and I don&#8217;t think alchemy has been updated in about 7 years.<\/p>\n<p>I then played music mp3&#8217;s while painting with Audio Expressions on, but got varied, and very uncontrollable results.\u00a0 It seems only slightly more useful than random jitter.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blog.greenarrowfrog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/mothcolor.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-99 \" src=\"http:\/\/www.blog.greenarrowfrog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/mothcolor-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"714\" height=\"402\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.blog.greenarrowfrog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/mothcolor-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.blog.greenarrowfrog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/mothcolor-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.blog.greenarrowfrog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/mothcolor-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.blog.greenarrowfrog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/mothcolor.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 714px) 100vw, 714px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Eventually I got to wondering what kind of sound oscillator he has strapped to his tablet.<\/p>\n<p>Having no knowledge of audio equipment I went back to the internet and looked at all kinds of things from MPC&#8217;s, to Moog Modulars, DACs, external sound cards, pedals and keyboard synthesizers.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually I laid my eyes on, and immediately ordered,<\/p>\n<p>this&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blog.greenarrowfrog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/kaossilator2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-85 \" src=\"http:\/\/www.blog.greenarrowfrog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/kaossilator2-721x1024.jpg\" alt=\"kaossilator2\" width=\"408\" height=\"579\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.blog.greenarrowfrog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/kaossilator2-721x1024.jpg 721w, https:\/\/www.blog.greenarrowfrog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/kaossilator2-211x300.jpg 211w, https:\/\/www.blog.greenarrowfrog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/kaossilator2-768x1091.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 408px) 100vw, 408px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a Korg Kaossillator 2.<\/p>\n<p>It makes loops, beats and funny noises.\u00a0 If you plug it into your microphone jack it works directly with Painter&#8217;s audio expressions.<\/p>\n<p>After a lot of tweaking and tinkering I got it to work pretty well with some of my custom brushes.\u00a0 You can dial in specific colors and get gradients within a single stroke.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately though, it&#8217;s just a fancy way of sliding your volume up and down.<\/p>\n<p>An external audio input device with &#8220;audio expression&#8221;
